What is the Visionz Project?

Imagine leaving high school for summer break. You're filled with optimism. You receive a call from the manager of a local business - they'd love to offer you summer work; but you have no idea how to present yourself in an interview or complete the application for the job.

Now, picture graduating from high school with a permanent job with the same business. You're ready to leave the nest, but you have a few problems: You don't have a savings account and you can't manage a budget. You need to cover rent, utilities, and food; it's about survival - but managing your money is a critical skill you just never learned.

Simply stated, many Detroit students graduate knowing the history of America, but few have the important life skills required to survive in America. They often leave school without the marketable job skills needed to compete in the market place and they struggle to earn a livable wage. What these young people, as well as others in the community need, are marketable job skills, connections to employers offering long term job opportunities, the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge, skills and passion for actual work, financial education and internship opportunities to prepare them for professional careers and self-sufficiency. Introducing the Visionz Project, a comprehensive, interactive curriculum that combines a technology-supported instructor-led classroom course and a powerful app designed to enhance the lives of at-risk Detroit youth by providing them with six critical work place interpersonal and professional skills they will need to be successful in life. These skills are communication, attitude and enthusiasm, teamwork, networking, problem solving and critical thinking, The Visionz Project is a highly interactive, Detroit-based training, experiential learning and support program that uses technology and instructor-led classroom training to instruct students on the employability skills needed to secure and retain a job, career exploration, entrepreneurship basics and critical soft skills required to be successful in the work place; "skills to pay the bills". With access to an intensive curriculum with lively and engaging activities, real-world training, computers, and a special app to help them learn, Visionz students will absorb the oft-elusive skills that can make or break an individual.

In tandem, the mobile and web app, which is currently in development, we will use video and other media to help students make the right choices in everything from choosing what to wear at a job interview to how to present themselves in the community. While students work their way through the course, and even after they finish their training, they'll rely on the staff support and the app for professional and personal guidance.

Developed by several business professionals and entrepreneurs who have already held successful training courses throughout the country, the Visionz app and curriculum were made for engagement, using relevant, real-life scenarios and role-playing to reach even the most closed-off student. Between the curriculum and the app, Visionz students will learn how to present themselves at a job interview, manage a budget, navigate a business environment, and more. Visionz training lasts a lifetime, and we invite you to join us on our journey.

Visionz Curriculum

After years of research and hands-on work with at-risk youth in several communities, our team discovered that in order for Detroit's young people to succeed, they needed considerable help in four major areas.

  • Life Skills Management
  • Financial Literacy
  • Workforce Preparation
  • Social Media Mastery

Overview

Life Skills Management
How should one act in a business setting? What does it take to build a professional image? Do you have the ability to effectively manage your personal responsibilities? In this course, students will learn how to shine and thrive in their professional, social, and personal situations by demonstrating their skills in communication, attitude and enthusiasm, teamwork, networking, problem solving and critical thinking,
Financial Literacy
In this portion, students will learn the basic skills of managing their money and finance enabling them to do everything from handling bills to saving for the future. Students who complete the course will leave knowing how to budget, plan, and even set aside money for the unexpected.
Workforce Preparation
This part of the curriculum helps young people navigate the world of work. Students are provided instruction on resume writing, interviewing, career exploration, employability skills and skills needed to obtain and retain a job and entrepreneurship basics. Our goal is to provide the skills training, direct work experience, life support and mentoring relationships that will have a life-long impact on students' career development.
Social Media Mastery
Most young people use social media to communicate and carry on relationships, but it takes real practice, knowledge, and discipline to effectively master Facebook, Twitter, and the many other social platforms. From creating job search-friendly posts to crafting important relationships via social media, young people will leave the program much more experienced in leveraging this technology.
